Did you know that simple routines can drastically improve your mental health?

For me, Saturdays are more than just a day off. They're a chance to reconnect with my body, mind, and purpose. This week, I documented my "Saturdays done right" routine, a combination of swimming, sauna therapy, and self-care that has transformed my mental and physical well-being. In this post, I’ll break down the steps, share the benefits, and explain how One Life’s mission ties into this journey.

The Connection Between Fitness and Mental Health

Physical activity isn’t just about building strength or losing weight—it’s a powerful tool for improving mental health. Here’s how:

  • Releases Endorphins: Exercise triggers the release of feel-good hormones that reduce stress and boost mood.

  • Reduces Anxiety and Depression: Studies show that regular physical activity can lower symptoms of depression by up to 30%.

  • Improves Sleep: Swimming and sauna therapy can help regulate your sleep cycle, promoting deeper and more restful nights.

For me, swimming is a form of meditation. Each stroke calms my mind, bringing clarity and focus to my day. It’s about more than fitness; it’s about finding peace in movement.

My Saturday Routine: A Journey to Reconnection

1. Swimming: A Refreshing Start

There’s something magical about diving into a pool first thing in the morning. The rhythm of swimming clears my mind and energizes my body. It’s the perfect way to set a positive tone for the day.

2. Sauna: Building Mental Resilience

The sauna is where the real mental challenge begins. I started with 15 minutes and gradually worked my way up to 30. Here’s why:

  • Mindfulness Practice: I focus on deep breathing, allowing the heat to relax my body and center my thoughts.

  • Strengthens Mindset: Pushing through the heat and staying committed to a set time builds mental toughness.

  • Detoxification and Recovery: Sweating it out helps flush toxins and supports muscle recovery after a workout.

3. Cold Shower: The Ultimate Reset

Three minutes under a cold shower might sound daunting, but it’s incredibly refreshing. The cold shocks my system, leaving me feeling recharged and invigorated. It’s the perfect contrast to the sauna and a great way to reset.

4. Treat Yourself: Balance and Enjoyment

After all that effort, I head to my favorite café for a well-deserved breakfast and coffee. Since I’m currently bulking, I enjoy a hearty meal, but if I were in a calorie deficit, I’d opt for something lighter. It’s all about finding balance and rewarding yourself in a way that aligns with your goals.
